About the museum
The castle of Govone has a history of around a thousand years. In the 18th century it belonged to the Solaro counts, diplomats and men of culture: they had Filippo Juvarra work on the residence, hosted Jean-Jacques Rousseau as a servant, and were among the first to decorate a room with Chinese wallpaper.
In the 19th century the castle became the summer residence of Charles Felix of Savoy and Queen Maria Cristina of Bourbon-Naples, to whom the love of the garden’s roses is linked; the Salone d’onore took shape in this period. At the beginning of the 20th century the Comune di Govone bought the building, which was used as a home, school and community centre.
Today the castle is part of the Residenze Reali Sabaude, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Since 2015 the Associazione Govone Residenza Sabauda has supported the restorations, with European funds, the Ministry of Culture and some banking foundations. The visit route takes in the grand staircase, the queen’s and king’s apartments, the Chinese rooms and the Salone d’onore, and ends in the park, gardens, greenhouse and rose garden.
