About the museum
The Museo del Risorgimento di Asti is housed on the ground floor of Palazzo Ottolenghi, one of the city’s most important Baroque palaces, which overlooks Corso Alfieri, formerly the Via Maestra. Its original core is due to the initiative of the Asti patron Leonetto Ottolenghi, who commissioned portraits of leading figures of the Risorgimento and paintings of battles.
The collections grew over time thanks to donations from Asti families whose members had taken part in Risorgimento events, or from their heirs. The route brings together oval portraits of historical figures, paintings of battle scenes, banners of workers’ mutual aid societies and of Garibaldian veterans, weapons, medals, coins and personal objects.
Beneath the museum there is also an air-raid shelter from 1943, with panels devoted to the history of Asti between the two world wars.
