About the museum

The Teatro Argentina, inaugurated in 1732 by Duke Giuseppe Sforza Cesarini, houses in its attic a small museum that documents its history, conceived by Cecilia Pericoli Ridolfini in 1973. The route is divided into three sections: the first, topographical, shows the transformations of the urban area in which the theatre arose; the second brings together remains of the ancient structure and earlier decorations, including fragments of the 18th- and 19th-century velarium, murals in Pompeian style, and the cartoon and studies by Cesare Fracassini for the curtain showing the nymph Egeria advising Numa Pompilius.

The third section is devoted to the life of the theatre, with stage costumes, posters, drawings and portraits of singers, actors and dancers, from the first opera staged, “Berenice” (1732), to twentieth-century productions. Some of the material reproduces originals held in other Roman institutions. A panoramic terrace offers a view of the temples of the sacred area of Largo Argentina.
