About the museum
The Duomo stands where the ancient cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and the basilica of Santa Tecla once stood. After the collapse of the bell tower, in 1386 Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo promoted the construction of a new and larger cathedral; Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti soon took control of the works and imposed a more ambitious design, inspired by European Gothic.
Architects from France and Germany were called to the site, with numerous revisions and tensions with the Lombard craftsmen, and the result was a work of great originality in the Italian and European landscape. The construction site, entrusted to the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, has never truly been completed: even today the Fabbrica's marble workers replace damaged parts.
The monumental complex includes the Cathedral, the terraces and the Madonnina, the organ, the church of San Gottardo in Corte, the archaeological area with the remains of the ancient episcopal complex, and the Museo del Duomo. The visit requires clothing appropriate for a place of worship.
