About the museum
The Museo del Duomo tells the building history of Milan Cathedral, a construction site that has lasted for more than six hundred years. It is on the ground floor of the Palazzo Reale, in Piazza del Duomo, and is run by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano.
The museum opened to the public in 1953 with a display by Ugo Nebbia; in 1974 the original core was expanded and redisplayed under the direction of Ernesto Brivio. In the early 2000s, during the renovation works at the Palazzo Reale, the museum was closed and completely redesigned by Guido Canali, reopening to visitors in 2013.
The route, which now exceeds 2,000 square metres, begins with the Treasury of the Cathedral, owned by the Metropolitan Chapter, and continues chronologically through statues, stained glass, paintings, tapestries, architectural models, terracottas and plaster casts, all original works from the Duomo and largely removed for conservation reasons and after wartime damage.
The church of San Gottardo in Corte, accessible directly from the museum, is also part of the visit. For schools and families there are workshops in the Aula Didattica, while the Sala Gian Galeazzo hosts temporary exhibitions.
