About the museum
The Museo del Novecento is housed in the Palazzo dell’Arengario, in piazza del Duomo in Milan, and was inaugurated on 6 December 2010. It was born with the aim of spreading knowledge of 20th-century art and of offering a broader view of the collections that Milan has inherited over time: the Civiche Raccolte d’Arte, which count over four thousand works of Italian art of the 20th and 21st centuries, built up thanks to the generosity and passion of Milanese collectors.
The museum displays more than three hundred works selected from these collections. The permanent collection traces the main stages of contemporary art, combining the chronological criterion with a critical-thematic interpretation. The story opens with the Galleria del Futurismo, reached from the large spiral ramp inside the building, and continues on the fourth and fifth floors with the period from the 1920s to the 1950s, up to the Sala Fontana, where the artist’s luminous installation seems to embrace the city. The route closes with the rooms dedicated to art between the 1960s and the 1990s.
Alongside its exhibition activity, the museum deals with the conservation, study and promotion of Italian artistic heritage of the 20th and 21st centuries. Since its foundation the collection has continued to grow thanks to donations from artists, collectors and patrons. The museum is run by the Comune di Milano.
