About the museum
The Ecomuseo delle Acque del Gemonese is a dispersed, participatory museum that aims to preserve, tell and renew the cultural identity of the communities of the Gemonese area. It covers the alluvial plain of the Campo di Osoppo-Gemona, in central Friuli, and involves the municipalities of Gemona del Friuli, Artegna, Buja, Majano, Montenars and Osoppo, combining nature conservation, cultural heritage and sustainable local development.
Its base is the LAB Terremoto, a visitor centre in the historic centre of Gemona dedicated to the 1976 earthquake and the reconstruction. The exhibition route uses interactive tools to explore the structure of the Earth, plate tectonics, the origin of earthquakes, measuring instruments, prevention, and the geology of Italy, Friuli and the Gemonese area.
Among the ecomuseum’s initiatives are the project on the heritage of bread between Carnia and the Gemonese area, the music series “Note nei roccoli e nelle corti” (Notes in the bird-trapping groves and courtyards) on summer weekends, nature walks, geological and archaeological visits, workshops and exhibitions. There are also routes for schools, an archive of memory and a library.
