About the museum
The Ecomuseo Luogo della Memoria is an ethnographic museum conceived and set up by Professor Umberto Zaffina in the Patelle district, in the historic centre of Sambiase, now part of Lamezia Terme. It is housed in two old interconnected dwellings of a 19th-century house that belonged to the founder's ancestors, and its spaces have remained almost unchanged.
The collections include almost a thousand objects, from household furnishings to tools used by local craftsmen and farmers until 1940. The display does not follow a rigid museum layout and uses no panels: the objects, together with the guide's commentary, show the activities of the past – carpenter, blacksmith, cooper, shoemaker, barber – and the rooms of the kitchen, dining room and bedroom.
The museum reopened to visitors on 21 March 2018 with a new guide, Mimmo Catania, an expert in ancient weights and measures. Nearby there is also a textile workshop with wooden looms, which recreates the processing of fibres, starting with broom.
