Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The museum is housed in the ancient convent complex of San Domenico in Taverna, with about 2,000 square metres of exhibition space. The first resolutions of the city council for its founding date back to 1989; in 1990 a museum centre opened in a single room with an exhibition dedicated to Mimmo Rotella.

At the heart of the collections is Mattia Preti (Taverna 1613 – Valletta 1699), to whom one room of the route is dedicated, alongside works by his brother Gregorio and by 17th- and 18th-century artists such as Giovan Battista Spinelli and Antonio Samelli. Other rooms hold 19th-century furniture from the old pharmacy of Taverna, polychrome wooden sculptures, textiles and sacred vestments, and drawings and prints.

The museum also includes a section of 20th-century contemporary art and is part of a network of routes that includes the monumental church of San Domenico, the open-air contemporary art museum MACAT and the Via della Poesia.
