About the museum
MARCA opened in March 2008 as a multifunctional cultural centre devoted to art from antiquity to the contemporary age. It is housed in a restored building in the historic centre of Catanzaro that once accommodated a school for the deaf and a printing works. The building has three levels, with a courtyard, a garden and a large panoramic terrace overlooking the city.
On the ground floor are the provincial Pinacoteca (picture gallery) and Gipsoteca (plaster-cast gallery), with some 120 works, paintings and sculptures from the 16th to the 20th century, including works by Antonello de Saliba, Battistello Caracciolo, Mattia Preti, Salvator Rosa and Andrea Sacchi, as well as many works by Andrea Cefalì and plaster casts and marbles by Francesco Jerace.
On the first floor is the permanent collection devoted to Mimmo Rotella, an artist born in Catanzaro, alongside rooms for temporary exhibitions; the basement houses a multipurpose centre for contemporary culture.
