About the museum
The Polo didattico del Ghiaccio is one of the venues of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese, run by the association of the same name based in Gavinana. It was established in 1998 in the former school of Pracchia, in Via della Noce, to document an activity that has now disappeared: the production and trade of natural ice.
Between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, the Montagna Pistoiese, particularly the Reno valley, was a centre of ice production. The best-known plant is the Ghiacciaia della Madonnina at Le Piastre, fed by an artificial lake that exploited the river’s water, a system of channels and dams, and the winter cold.
The exhibition presents photographic and audiovisual documentation on the ice industry, original tools and two models, one of the Madonnina area and one of an early artificial ice factory. The centre is linked to the Itinerario del Ghiaccio and the Sentiero della Ghiacciaia, which connects Le Piastre to Pontepetri. The venue is currently closed for renovation works.
