About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Francesco Ferrucci, commander of the Florentine Republic, and to the Battle of Gavinana on 3 August 1530 against the imperial troops of Charles V, allied with the Medici. In 1908 a committee was formed to create the museum; in 1929 the former Battistini house on the square in Gavinana was purchased, restored and donated to the municipality. The museum opened on 31 August 1931.
In 1956 the collection was reorganised and enriched with material from the Florentine galleries, and the following year the “new” museum, curated by Renzo Chiarelli, opened. The display remained essentially unchanged until the museum closed for restoration in 2017.
After consolidation work, upgrades to the building systems and the removal of architectural barriers, the museum reopened on 30 November 2025 with a renewed route on two floors. The new display presents Ferrucci's role in the wars of the 16th century, the birth of his myth during the Risorgimento and the symbolic value of his sacrifice for freedom, with documents, 19th-century uniforms, paintings, prints, models of the battle and multimedia installations.
