L'Ingegno della Montagna. Mani che inventano, menti che trasformano

The exhibition tells the story of the productive activities of the Montagna Pistoiese: the historical context of the local economy, objects, tools and projects of the companies involved, and video interviews with the people who carry them on.

About the museum

Palazzo Achilli, in Gavinana, takes its name from the wealthy Roman merchant Filippo Achilli, who in the 18th century bought the ancient structure, which had belonged to the prince of Piombino Ludovico Appiani, and enlarged and partly rebuilt it. Restored by the Province of Pistoia in 2005, today it is the information and exhibition point of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese and houses its headquarters.

The Ecomuseo, created at the wish of the Province of Pistoia and active since 1990, was the first ecomuseum in Italy. Since November 2011 it has been run by the Associazione Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese; the Regione Toscana accredited it as an ecomuseum of regional importance in 2015, and since 2019 it has been the lead institution of the Sistema museale Montagna Pistoiese (SiMoP). The Ecomuseo’s itineraries, among ironworks, water mills, ice houses and natural landscapes, tell centuries of history and work in the mountains.

At Palazzo Achilli visitors find information on the whole network of itineraries and temporary exhibitions dedicated to the history of the Montagna Pistoiese; the palace also regularly organises educational workshops for adults and children.
