About the museum
The museum, founded in 1929, gathers the works that over the centuries were placed in the cathedral of San Giorgio and reflects the artistic culture of Renaissance Ferrara. Since 2000 it has been housed in the complex of the former church of San Romano, near the cathedral.
From the 10th century the complex was home to Benedictine monks from the abbey of Fruttuaria, and later to Augustinian canons regular. On the church portal, a tympanum shows Saint Romanus on horseback; it is attributed to the sculptor Nicholaus and dated 1143.
The collections include illuminated manuscripts, medieval stone finds, reliquaries, sacred vestments and major works such as the organ shutters by Cosmè Tura, the cycle of the Months from the Porta dei Mesi, the Madonna della Melagrana by Jacopo della Quercia and 16th-century tapestries with stories of Saints George and Maurelius.
