About the museum
Casa Romei was built around the middle of the 15th century by the merchant Giovanni Romei and was enlarged and embellished on the occasion of his second marriage to Polissena d'Este, shortly before 1468. After the owner's death (1483) it passed by inheritance to the nuns of the neighbouring Corpus Domini monastery, who incorporated it into their building. In the second half of the 16th century Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este had it enlarged and decorated. Acquired by the State in 1898, it became a museum in the course of the 1950s, housing detached frescoes, statues and tablets from city buildings. Since 2014 it has been managed by the ministry through the Polo museale dell'Emilia-Romagna, and since 2019 by the Direzione regionale Musei.
It is one of the most interesting and most legible examples of a noble residence from the age of the marquises Leonello and Borso d'Este, combining medieval and Renaissance elements. The majestic courtyard of honour has a large terracotta monogram of Christ. On the ground floor the rooms have Gothic decorations and house a small lapidarium and the Sala delle Sibille, with prophetesses painted against a background of green hedge.
On the piano nobile (main floor) the 16th-century apartment is richly decorated and preserves antique furniture. In the salone d'onore (main hall) the white eagle repeats the emblem of Ippolito II d'Este, while Giovanni Romei's study has a coffered ceiling with drawings on paper applied to it. The museum holds works from suppressed churches and convents, including pieces attributed to Francesco del Cossa, Bastianino and Alfonso Lombardi.
