About the museum

The plant was the processing facility for the tuna of Favignana and Formica and is one of the best-known places on the island. After more than twenty years of abandonment, in the 1990s the complex was bought by the Sicilian Region and turned into a museum.

Machinery, nets, barrels, tin boxes and the boats used for the mattanza (the tuna killing) have been left in place in the rooms, so as to preserve the atmosphere of work in the tuna fishery. Exhibition rooms have been created inside the old warehouses and departments of the plant: contemporary and historical photography, with works by major authors, coexists with the memory of the tuna fishermen (tonnaroti).

An antiquarium section holds Greek-Roman and Punic amphorae, lead anchor stocks and a 14th-century pewter flask, while two rooms are dedicated to the Battaglia delle Egadi (Battle of the Aegates) of 241 BC, with rams from Roman ships and interactive multimedia stations. The complex also hosts temporary contemporary art exhibitions.
