About the museum
The eight large Flemish tapestries, made in Brussels in the 16th century, have belonged to the Chiesa Madre in Marsala since 1589, when they were bequeathed by Antonino Lombardo, archbishop of Messina and a native of Marsala. They depict scenes of the war between Romans and Jews (AD 66–70), inspired by Flavius Josephus's “The Jewish War”.
For many years the tapestries were displayed in a museum in a room next to the Chiesa Madre. After restoration carried out in Palermo at the Oratorio dei Bianchi from 2020 onwards, they returned to Marsala, with the aim of placing them in a new museum in the former Church of the Collegio dei Gesuiti, a few hundred metres from the Chiesa Madre.
According to the latest news (August 2026), the new site is not yet open to the public: the tapestries remain in crates, awaiting acceptance testing of the building and completion of the display, and no opening date has been announced.
