About the museum
The Lilibeo Regional Archaeological Museum is housed in the Baglio Anselmi, a former winery built around 1880 on the outskirts of Marsala, near the Capo Boeo promontory. The building was assigned to the museum in 1986 by the Sicilian Region, and the museum was inaugurated in 1999. At the end of the 2000s the neighbouring Baglio Tumbarello-Grignani, linked to the Baglio Anselmi by a covered passage, was also acquired as regional state property.
The building was adapted to house the Punic Ship, discovered in 1969 in the waters of the Isola Grande, at the northern mouth of the Stagnone lagoon: it is the only surviving example of a Punic ship. The museum also houses the Roman Ship of Marausa and the Venere Lilybetana, also called the Venere Callipigia, a Roman statue of the 1st–2nd century AD that is a copy of a 2nd-century BC Hellenistic original.
The museum is part of the Parco archeologico di Lilibeo and documents the history of the ancient Lilybaeum, the city founded by Punic settlers at the end of the 5th century BC and extending down to the sea.
