About the museum
Falseum was founded in 2015 on the initiative of the municipality of Verrone, and is presented as the first museum in Italy devoted entirely to forgery as a historical, cultural and social phenomenon. It occupies the south-east wing of the Castello di Verrone, a residence of medieval origin that belonged to the Vialardi counts and was later inhabited by the botanist Maurizio Zumaglini, author of the “Flora pedemontana”.
The dynamic, interactive display takes visitors through famous lies, frauds, optical illusions, fake news of past times and scientific deceptions, in an ironic tone suitable for all ages. The underlying idea is to show how the ability to deceive has changed the course of history, in order to train people to tell true from false in the present day too and to develop a critical outlook.
The route has seven rooms: from the Quadrisfera, a multimedia kaleidoscope on forgery, to the alchemical laboratory dedicated to the scientific method; from the “Fabbrica del Falso”, with the Donation of Constantine and other historical forgeries, to the Escher-style staircase on rumours and conspiracy theories; from the turret on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the memory of the Shoah, up to the television studio with chroma key, where false news can be invented. The museum is owned by the municipality and managed by Turismo in Langa APS.
