About the museum
The Museo del Territorio biellese holds the civic collections of Biella, formed from the second half of the 19th century onwards through local finds, donations, bequests and deposits. It opened in December 2001 in the cloister beside the basilica of San Sebastiano, a Renaissance building commissioned by Sebastiano Ferrero and of Lombard inspiration.
The route is in two itineraries, one palaeontological-archaeological and one historical-artistic. The archaeology section, opened in 2011, starts from the marine fossils of the area and reaches the Middle Ages with a multimedia display. The museum also has a specialist library with more than 2,000 publications.
In June 2024 the museum was closed completely to allow the building to be renovated; no reopening date has been given.
