About the museum
The Pinacoteca was founded in 1854, when the lawyer and magistrate Pietro Bartolomeo Repossi (Binasco 1776 – Chiari 1854) bequeathed his collection of paintings, sculptures and engravings to the already existing Biblioteca Morcelliana, founded by the Jesuit and epigraphist Stefano Antonio Morcelli (Chiari 1737–1821). In 1966 the bequest of the two founders took the institutional form of the Fondazione Biblioteca Morcelli-Pinacoteca Repossi.
In 2017 the donation of Eva Pederzani Bonicelli Reggio added about 90 works to the collection and made a new display across ten rooms necessary, organised in thematic routes: Sala delle Pale d’Altare, Sala della Pittura Devozionale, Grande Galleria, Sala dei Paesaggi, Sala Classica, Sezione Contemporanea, Collezione di Icone Giordano-Scalvi, Sezione Pelati and Gipsoteca.
Among the most precious holdings is the print collection of about 4,000 prints, with sheets by artists such as Pollaiolo, Dürer, Mantegna, Schongauer and Rembrandt, displayed in rotation in a dedicated room. The Foundation also holds the historic library and archive, and organises guided visits, exhibitions, conferences and educational activities for schools.
