About the museum

Villa de Claricini Dornpacher stands at Bottenicco di Moimacco, a small village on the outskirts of Cividale del Friuli. It was built in the 17th century by Francesco Claricini and completed in 1697 with the family chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross; since 1952 it has been recorded as a Venetian villa, and since 1961 the complex has been under state protection.

The family, which had come from Bologna to Cividale around the middle of the 13th century, received the Dornpacher coat of arms in 1418 and the title of counts in the 19th century. The last owner, Countess Giuditta (1891–1968), a collector and scholar of historic textiles, established the Foundation by will; it was founded in 1971 with its seat in the villa, for the purpose of preserving the historic and productive heritage and promoting studies and cultural activities.

By the family's wish, the villa keeps original furniture and art objects in every room, and it is opened periodically with guided tours. On the south side opens the Italian garden enclosed by balustrades, with four green areas decorated with box, statues and fountains; beyond the balustrade extends a park of about two hectares, with beeches, firs and centuries-old cedars.
