About the museum

The museum is housed in a historic palace on Piazza Patriarcato in Udine, where visitors see the piano nobile (main floor) with the Patriarchal Library. The collections comprise some 700 works, only some of which are on display, mainly from the parishes of the Udine diocese.

The most celebrated core consists of the 18th-century frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo, commissioned by the patriarch Dionisio Dolfin for the ceiling of the Scalone d'onore (grand staircase), the Galleria degli ospiti (guest gallery) and the Sala rossa (red room). The Sala azzurra (blue room) houses grotesques by Giovanni da Udine, while the Sala gialla (yellow room) is decorated with stuccoes.

The wooden sculpture section consists almost entirely of works moved from their original places of worship for reasons of conservation and protection.
