About the museum

The Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi was established in 1971 under the will of the art historian Roberto Longhi (1890–1970), who left it his library, photographic archive and art collection for the benefit of future generations. It is based in Villa “Il Tasso”, which Longhi bought in 1939 and where he lived with his wife Lucia Lopresti and the writer Anna Banti.

The art collection is arranged in six sections: the 13th and 14th centuries, the 15th and 16th centuries, the 17th century, Caravaggio and the Caravaggeschi, the 18th and 19th centuries, and the 20th century. Among the best-known works are the Boy Bitten by a Lizard attributed to Caravaggio, Saint Matthias by Jusepe de Ribera, the Pilgrim at Rest by Giacomo Ceruti, the Portrait of the actor David Ross by Johann Zoffany, the Bunch of Flowers by Filippo De Pisis and the Madonna and Child with Angels and Saints by Pietro da Rimini.

In addition to the collection, the Foundation holds Longhi’s library, photographic archive and papers, and promotes art-historical studies through scholarships, prizes, courses and seminars. The heritage can be visited during the monthly openings with guided tours, by booking only.
