About the museum
The Palazzina dei Mulini in Portoferraio was Napoleon Bonaparte’s town residence during his exile on the island of Elba, from 4 May 1814 to 26 February 1815. Here the emperor recreated a small court. Today the palazzina houses the Museo nazionale delle residenze napoleoniche, which runs it together with Villa San Martino, the summer residence outside the town.
The rooms hold memorabilia, period furnishings and part of the library of 2,378 volumes, mostly on history, which Napoleon later gave to the community of Portoferraio. The museum is surrounded by historic Italian-style gardens.
The building was closed from 10 May 2025 for a major restoration funded by the PNRR (Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan). According to the Ministry of Culture, the works have been completed and the palazzina and gardens have reopened to the public.
