About the museum
The Galleria comunale d’arte contemporanea was established by the municipality of Arezzo in 1962 to house works acquired through the Premio Arezzo, a painting competition. After a closure in the 1990s, the gallery reopened in December 2003 at its present site in Piazza San Francesco, next to the basilica.
The permanent collection consists mainly of paintings and prints from the second half of the 20th century, with particular attention to Italian artists. Besides purchases linked to the prize, the holdings have grown through other acquisitions, bequests and donations. Artists represented include those active between the two world wars, such as Castellani, Maccari, Levi and Paulucci; figures of the 1950s and 1960s, such as Davico, Garino and Coppola; the new figuration of Berni, Vacchi and Vespignani; and artists of the 1980s and 1990s, among them Cardinali, Gadaleta, Habicher, Golba and Sani.
The gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions of 20th-century and contemporary artists, which set the rhythm of its opening calendar.
