About the museum

Ivan Bruschi, born in 1920 at Castiglion Fibocchi into a family of antique furniture dealers, was an antiques dealer first in Florence and then in Arezzo, where he was among the promoters of the Fiera Antiquaria, founded in 1968. From 1960 he lived with his sister Dina in the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, in the centre of the town, which had been damaged by a bombing in 1943 and then restored: besides serving as his home and the seat of his personal collection, it was a place of cultural and social gatherings.

Bruschi died in 1996 and by will provided for the creation of a foundation to continue his work and open the palace as a house museum. The holdings were arranged and catalogued by experts of the Scuola Normale di Pisa, who also curated the museum display. The building, one of the most representative of the city in the Late Middle Ages, overlooks the Romanesque pieve (parish church) of Santa Maria, not far from the Logge del Vasari.

The collection, formed from the 1960s onwards through the purchase of collections and objects from the antiques market, numbers about 8,000 pieces. The route runs through sixteen rooms on three floors, with the Venere d'Arezzo, Egyptian, Etruscan, pre-Columbian and Roman finds, paintings and drawings, furniture from the 15th to the 19th century, sculptures, armour, textiles, liturgical objects, jewellery, coins and small bronzes. The house museum is also a cultural space that hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, lectures and concerts.
