About the museum
The Galleria Comunale d'Arte occupies a building with a neoclassical façade from 1828, designed by Carlo Boyl di Putifigari, which stands on the site of the former Savoyard gunpowder magazine in the Giardini Pubblici. In the early 1930s the structure was adapted into an art gallery to a design by Ubaldo Badas, and it opened in 1933 as the first civic museum in Sardinia.
The best-known core of the collections is the Ingrao Collection, which includes works by Umberto Boccioni (31 paintings and drawings), Giacomo Balla, Mario Sironi, Fortunato Depero, Gino Severini, Filippo De Pisis, Carlo Carrà, Ottone Rosai and Mario Mafai. The route also includes a room dedicated to Giorgio Morandi, one with more than forty works by Mino Maccari and one dedicated to Francesco Ciusa.
Sculptures are placed in the outdoor spaces, including the Dormienti by Mimmo Paladino (2011). The Biblioteca dell'Arte, with free admission, is also housed in the building.
