About the museum
The museum was founded in 1931 at the wish of Justice Minister Alfredo Rocco and was first housed on the ground floor of the Carceri Nuove in Via Giulia. In 1975 it moved to the adjacent former juvenile prison of the Palazzo del Gonfalone and, after changing its name from “Museo criminale”, took the name Museo criminologico (MUCRI). It remained closed for about fifteen years from the late 1970s and reopened in 1994.
The collections include instruments of death, such as guillotines, and of torture, weapons and pistols used in famous crimes, the red cloak of the executioner Mastro Titta, and material on criminal anthropology. Since the 1990s the display has followed a historical-cultural route in three periods, reconstructing the history of the prison system, penal reform and the evolution of crime.
The museum has been temporarily closed to the public since 1 June 2016.
