About the museum
The castle overlooks the harbour of Torri del Benaco, on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda. According to tourist sources, the first fortifications date back to Roman times, to the 1st century BC. In the fourteenth century the Scaligeri strengthened the harbour's defences and raised the castle on the ruins of an earlier structure. In the following centuries the area passed to the Visconti and to the Republic of Venice.
After Italian unification the building went through a long period of neglect, until the renovation at the end of the 1970s. The castle museum, devoted to the culture of Torri del Benaco and the upper Garda, was established in 1983.
The route passes through rooms devoted to caulkers and the tools for building fishing boats, to olive processing with the press, to fishing with ancient nets, to historical documents and to a model of the village. One room displays rock engravings from the area. Outdoors you can visit the lemon house, still cultivated, the citrus greenhouse dating from 1760 and one of the few examples open to the public on the lake, the walkways and the main tower, from which there is a wide view over the lake.
