About the museum
GranUM occupies a room in the Palazzo Pretorio in Baveno, on Piazza della Chiesa, and is conceived as a multimedia and multisensory information point on pink granite and its role in the history and economy of the town. Granite shapes Baveno's street names, buildings and monuments, and it is the best known of the lake granites.
The exhibition is divided into four thematic areas: the granites and stone varieties of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area, mineral rarities, the craft working of granite with historical and modern tools, and the history of the use of stone locally and abroad.
The museum is part of the Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Geopark and is linked to the Ecomuseo del Granito di Montorfano; near Baveno, the Sentiero dei Picasass leads to the quarry area of Monte Camoscio. The museum offers programmes for schools and can host up to two classes at a time.
