About the museum

Il Mauriziano is a country complex at San Maurizio, along the Via Emilia, linked to the Malaguzzi family and to Ludovico Ariosto, who stayed there as a guest and visited it as a summer residence. The entrance is marked by a 16th-century brick triumphal arch, traditionally attributed to Orazio Malaguzzi, to whom the restoration and enrichment of the property are also due.

The square-plan building, known as the “Palazzo nuovo” or “Casino dell'Ariosto”, has a central through-hall and side rooms. Alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries changed the building without erasing its 16th-century layout. The salone and the sala grande retain frescoes by Prospero Malaguzzi with episodes from the family history.

The heart of the visit is three cabinets (camerini) decorated on a raised level, with paintings attributed to the school of Niccolò dell'Abate: the Camerino dei Poeti, with Parnassus; the Camerino dell'Ariosto, with views of the park; and the Camerino degli Orazi. The recent restoration of the complex is part of the national project “Ducato Estense”.
