About the museum
Kleine Berlin is a complex of underground shelters from the Second World War in Trieste, made up of a German section and an Italian one. The German section was a shelter for military personnel: its original entrance, a concrete hood, was demolished in 1948 by the Gruppo Rastrellatori Bombe e Mine di Trieste, which also buried the main entrance. A well with a spiral staircase connected the shelter to General Globocnik’s villa and to his workplace at the Tribunale (law courts).
The Italian section is a municipal air-raid shelter about 250 metres long, built by the firm Emilio Colombo for the Comune di Trieste. In its last part the tunnel was not lined with concrete, and nature has formed stalactites, stalagmites and small concretion basins.
Since 1995 the complex has been granted by the Comune di Trieste to the Club Alpinistico Triestino, which runs it with volunteers and opens it to the public with guided tours.
