About the museum
The museum was established under the will of Giovanni Scaramangà di Altomonte, a Trieste merchant of Greek origin. His family came from the island of Chios and had moved to Trieste at the time of the Greek uprising. Scaramangà served as councillor and later president of the Chamber of Commerce and, late in his career, as president of the Lloyd Triestino. From 1947 he devoted himself to the city's cultural life, including work for the Museo Civico Revoltella.
The museum occupies the founder's former home, a building from the second half of the 17th century overlooking Piazza Sant'Antonio, at the far end of the Canal Grande. Some rooms have been kept as they were, others have been adapted for displays.
The collections, first shown in 1962, bring together memorabilia relating to the history of Trieste, assembled by the collector.
