About the museum
Kronos is the museum of the cathedral and of the diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio. It is located in the centre of the city, in rooms of the former Palazzo della Prevostura next to the apse of the cathedral, and in spaces within the cathedral itself. Founded in 2015, the museum tells the story of the episcopal complex and preserves the material and devotional heritage of the diocese, maintaining the link between the works and the community to which they belong.
The route unfolds over three levels. On the ground floor are the room devoted to the history of the cathedral, the sculpture room, the treasury with sacred silverware and votive gold, and a small picture gallery with altarpieces. On the second level, in the upper sacristies in neo-Gothic style, liturgical textiles and reliquaries are displayed. On the third level is kept Codex 65, known as the Libro del Maestro, a parchment manuscript begun in the 12th century and considered one of the most important in Europe, presented with a multimedia room and interactive screens.
From the third level the climb to the dome begins: through passages within the thickness of the walls, spiral staircases and attics, one reaches the loggia of the drum, where the cycle of frescoes painted by Guercino between 1626 and 1627 can be admired. The museum also offers educational activities for schools and families, as well as some annual cultural programmes.
