About the museum

The Museo civico di storia naturale di Piacenza holds the city’s natural history collections. During a transitional period, the municipality has set up a temporary route, the Piccolo Museo di Storia Naturale, which opened to the public on 24 October 2025 in the Spazio Mostre of Palazzo Farnese, at Piazza Cittadella 29, to ensure continuity for the collections and educational activities. The initiative is the result of collaboration between the municipal administration, the Direzione dei Musei civici, the Società Piacentina di Scienze Naturali and the Fondazione di Piacenza e Vigevano.

The display presents a selection from the museum’s heritage: the Dosi mineralogical collection, with more than 1400 specimens from around the world, the fruit of fifty years of passion and study by Giovanni Dosi and considered one of the most important mineral collections in Italy; the Della Marta malacological collection of fossil shells gathered along the Stirone by Mario Della Marta with the involvement of many students; and about twenty taxidermied animals from around the world, some shown for the first time.

Alongside the exhibition rooms is a teaching room with a programme of 47 workshops for schools, from nursery to upper secondary, on natural history, geology and palaeontology with a focus on the environment of Piacenza. Throughout the year, playful workshop series for children (Gioca e Impara) and talks for adults are offered.
