About the museum
The gallery was founded at the wish of the Piacenza nobleman Giuseppe Ricci Oddi (1869–1937), who from 1897 bought works of art and wished to turn his private collection into a public museum. His first purchases were “Dopo Novara” by Gaetano Previati and “Pecore tosate” by Francesco Filippini.
To house the Ricci Oddi collection he had a new building erected at his own expense, between 1924 and 1931, on the site of the former convent of San Siro, on land granted free of charge by the Comune. The design is by the architect Giulio Ulisse Arata, who worked without fee. The building combines 17th-century parts with new exposed-brick structures and is characterised by the zenithal natural light wanted by the founder.
The gallery was inaugurated on 11 October 1931. The collection is made up above all of Italian modern art and includes works by Medardo Rosso, Felice Casorati and the famous Portrait of a Lady by Gustav Klimt. The Foundation also runs a specialised library of about 8,000 volumes on 19th- and 20th-century art.
