About the museum
The lapidarium is in the entrance hall of the Torre del Brandale, one of Savona's medieval landmarks, which since 1924 has been the seat of the association “A Campanassa”, founded to protect the traditions, customs and dialect of the city. The tower dates from around the year 1000 and is documented from 1178; from 1202 it has been called Brandale. In the Middle Ages it was known as “Turris Perforata” because it rested on six pointed arches.
The entrance hall houses, among other things, Renaissance slate portals from Via Quarda. The tower was lowered in 1552 on orders from Genoa, raised again in 1583 and finally heightened between 1931 and 1933 to its original height. On the façade facing the harbour basin is the fresco of the Madonna della Misericordia by Eso Peluzzi.
The association's guided visit starts outside and crosses the entrance hall with the lapidarium, the rooms on the first floor (Sala dell'Anziania, Sala dell'Abate) and the second floor (Sala dell'Angiolina, Sala degli Stemmi, Sala di Cristoforo Colombo), and ends in the bell chamber, with a 360-degree view over the city.
