About the museum
The Museo del Tesoro della Cattedrale di Savona brings together the finest painting, textile and goldsmiths' art of the sacred city. It is set up in the premises of the former Masseria, is reached through a door inside the cathedral choir, and was opened in 1982 to preserve and present to the public paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths' work and sacred vestments.
The route begins with a corridor of 14th-century alabaster sculptures and vestments, then continues into two rooms with 15th-century panels, such as the “Matrimonio mistico di santa Caterina” by Tuccio d’Andria and “L’Assunzione” by Ludovico Brea, and with the 16th-century “Trittico dell’adorazione dei Magi” by the Master of Hoogstraeten.
The goldsmiths' section includes pieces dating back to the early 16th century, linked to the Della Rovere enrichment of the old cathedral on the Priamar: a reliquary cross from the mid-13th century, a “Fuga in Egitto” of 13th-century French goldsmiths' work, the monstrance of Sixtus IV, the 15th-century crozier of Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere and the altar cross of Cardinal Riario. There follow Ligurian silverwork of the 17th and 18th centuries and, in the display cases and cupboards of the Masseria, textiles, embroideries and sacred vestments that belonged to the bishops of Savona, such as the 15th-century chasuble of Cardinal Vegerio.
