Area archeologica di Capo Boeo

Archaeological area of 28 hectares on the Capo Boeo promontory in Marsala, the core of the Lilibeo Park with the ancient city of Lilybaeum.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

The core of the Lilibeo Archaeological Park is the archaeological area of Capo Boeo, which covers 28 hectares and is bounded by the Lungomare Boeo along the coast and, on the inland side, by Viale Isonzo, Via Cesare Battisti and Via Isolato Egadi. It has remained almost entirely free of later overlying structures and intact from an archaeological point of view, because the medieval and then modern urban layout withdrew from the coastline onto a quadrilateral bounded by walls.

The area thus preserves much of the inhabited part of ancient Lilybaeum, which reached down to the sea, and it has been spared from building expansion since the late 19th century, when ruins began to emerge during various public works. The site also recalls the siege during the First Punic War.

Along the visit route one encounters, among other things, the fortifications, the public baths, the Plateia Aelia, the Byzantine-period road, the first and Roman-imperial phases of Insula I with the triclinium, the four-columned courtyard and the peristyle of the domus, the sacred area of Insula III, the Grotta della Sibilla (Cave of the Sibyl) and the church of San Giovanni Battista.
