About the museum
The Maison de Cogne Gérard-Dayné is located in the locality of Sonveulla, on the edge of the old village of Cogne, in the Aosta Valley. The complex consists of eight buildings arranged in an L shape and is considered one of the best examples of traditional Aosta Valley architecture; its present appearance dates from the first half of the 19th century, after an enlargement process that may have begun even before the 18th century.
After careful restoration the building has been turned into an ethnographic museum. Visitors see rooms typical of Cogne houses, such as the cor, a covered interior space, and the beu, the main room of domestic life, while the large hayloft is to be used in future for a long-term thematic exhibition.
The route tells the story of traditional architecture, dwellings, family life, agriculture, the forest environment, the mines, everyday objects, sacred art, beliefs and legends, and the language and literature of the Aosta Valley of former times. The museum is run by the Cooperativa Miniere di Cogne.
