About the museum
The Messner Mountain Museum Juval is one of Reinhold Messner's mountain museums. It is housed in Juval Castle, above the Val Venosta: a place with some 1,500 years of history, which is also today the residence of the Messner family. The Renaissance building retains a private character, and the collection is equally personal.
At the heart of the museum is the sacred mountain, understood as a spiritual projection and a cultural heritage. The exhibition presents collections, images and artefacts linked to mountains that hold special meaning for peoples around the world, such as Kailash, Fuji, Ayers Rock, Ararat and Olympus.
The collection includes Tibetan objects, masks from the five continents, frescoes, sculptures, an adventure library and meditative spaces; the narrative is not linear but atmospheric. The castle can be reached on foot or by shuttle from the car park in the valley, and the museum is open from late March to early November.
