About the museum

Monte Kronio, also known as Monte San Calogero, overlooks Sciacca and is crossed by a system of natural cavities from which warm vapours of thermal origin rise, linked to the city’s hydrothermal basin. The caves, studied for more than half a century by archaeologists and speleologists, were frequented by people since prehistory, long before the vapours invaded them, and are considered one of the most significant contexts in the Mediterranean for the study of prehistoric communities.

The Antiquarium was inaugurated on 7 October 1984 to house and present the materials from the excavation campaigns carried out inside the mountain between the 1960s and 1986. It is Sciacca’s only regional museum site and is entrusted to the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico della Valle dei Templi di Agrigento.

The building remained closed from 1 January 2020 for works to redevelop and technologically renew the exhibition spaces, systems and fittings; it reopened to the public on 30 September 2026. The rooms display prehistoric finds and evidence of the activities carried out inside the caves.
