About the museum
The museum tells the story of the Carnival of Sciacca, which calls itself the oldest in Sicily and is documented as a festive event with food traditions from 1626. From the late 19th century masked processions developed, followed by the carruzzate (carriage processions), leading to today’s allegorical floats; since 1983 the structures have been designed using scale models and built with increasingly lightweight materials. The symbolic mask of the festival is Peppe Nappa. The Carnival is recognised by the Ministry as one of Italy’s historic carnivals and has been entered by the Sicilian Region in its register of intangible heritage.
The museum is in Via Salvador Allende, in the area where the spectacular part of the event takes place, with views of the sea. It displays dozens of sketches of historic allegorical floats and display cases of period costumes, and documents the creativity and work of the craftspeople who build the floats each year.
