About the museum
The house museum preserves the collections of Francesco Scaglione, born in Sciacca in 1859 into a middle-class family, who lived between Sciacca, Palermo and Rome, where he died in 1938. A passionate collector, he was honorary inspector of antiquities and fine arts for the province of Agrigento. After his death his daughters entrusted the house and the collections to the Comune di Sciacca.
The building, which stands in Piazza Don Minzoni in the historic centre, beside the Chiesa Madre, is a 19th-century house restored over two levels. The rooms retain painted vaulted ceilings and original majolica floors; the salon on the first floor looks onto a small inner garden. The museum presents the furnishing of a middle-class residence of the period, with furniture, objects, photographs and family portraits.
The collections include furnishings of Sicilian craftsmanship from the 19th and early 20th centuries, paintings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, Greek and Roman coins, Sicilian minerals and corals, as well as ceramics from Sciacca and from other Sicilian and Italian centres. The study holds photographs, mementos and albums of early 20th-century postcards.
