About the museum
The collection was born from the meeting of two collectors, Giuseppe D’Orsi, born in Naples, and Pino Polcaro, born in Maratea, who each had a small collection of nativity scenes and decided to combine them. Over some thirty years the collection has been enriched with unusual and increasingly sought-after pieces, found on journeys, at craft fairs in Italy and abroad and at flea markets, and expanded with gifts from friends and relatives.
Today it includes about a thousand nativity scenes from every part of the world, made from the most varied materials, from paper to silver. Looking at them is like making a tour of the world to see how different peoples represent the mystery of the Nativity, a journey that often goes back to the oldest traditions of folk art.
The association Natale nel Mondo has organised the exhibition in San Giovanni Valdarno since the 2004/05 edition, each year with a different theme, including nativity scenes from Europe, the Biennali d’arte, “La Natività nel Cinema” and “La Natività nell’Arte”. The exhibition is held in the Cappella dei Pellegrini, next to the basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie. During the Christmas period it is open to the public at fixed times; for the rest of the year visits are possible by appointment.
