About the museum
The museum is housed in the old sacristy of the Collegiata di San Lorenzo, the main church of Montevarchi, on the east side of Piazza Varchi. It preserves works of sacred art and furnishings from the collegiate church and from other churches in the town.
Among the most important pieces is the tempietto of the Sacro Latte (Holy Milk), also known as the tempietto robbiano, decorated with glazed terracottas by Andrea della Robbia. The panels were dismantled and walled in haphazardly in the sacristy, where they remained until 1973, when the tempietto was rebuilt in the parish museum. Also kept here are the structure of the ancient Marian aedicule that enclosed the relic of the Sacro Latte, dismantled during the 17th-century works and later reassembled, and a 17th-century wooden crucifix that stood in a chapel of the church until 1975.
The collegiate church played a central role in the religious and civic life of the town, and its history is tied to disputes with the church of Sant’Andrea a Cennano and to the devotion to the Sacro Latte, venerated in the church.
