About the museum
In 1864 a small collection of works connected with the church was begun in the sacristy of the basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie. In the 1950s the Florentine heritage authority (Soprintendenza) moved the paintings to a building adjoining the basilica; Luciano Berti catalogued and reorganised them and enriched the collection with new pieces, including the Annunciation attributed to Blessed Fra Angelico.
The museum, owned by the Diocese of Fiesole, opened to the public in 1990. Between 2000 and 2005 it was extended and renovated to current museum standards, and it reopened in November 2005. A restoration in the 1970s led to the definitive recognition of Blessed Fra Angelico’s hand in the Annunciation of San Giovanni Valdarno.
The route is spread over six rooms: from the Trinity by Mariotto di Nardo to the panels by Scheggia, Domenico di Michelino and Jacopo del Sellaio, up to the seventeenth-century works of Giovanni da San Giovanni and Gregorio Pagani. The last room holds liturgical vestments of the 17th and 18th centuries.
