About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Marchesale of Laterza, a castle founded in 1393 and later converted into a noble residence, which belonged among others to the d’Azzia family, of Neapolitan origin, and to the Perez Navarrete family, of Spanish origin.
The rooms present the production of Laterza maiolica through four collections. The Tondolo collection brings together ancient ceramics collected across Europe and brought back to the place of production. The Imbimbo collection comprises 170 pieces documenting much of Laterza’s production, from the 17th century to the end of the 18th and the early 19th century. Also on display are the maiolica of the Mater Domini sanctuary in Laterza, of the Diocese of Castellaneta (since 18 May 2017), and pieces from the private collection of Professor Vincenzo Calabrese (since 10 September 2017).
Laterza’s workshops produced large display dishes, albarelli (apothecary jars), bowls, amphorae and footed dishes, decorated with mythological figures, battle and hunting scenes, animals and floral motifs in blue, yellow-orange and green on a white glaze.
