About the museum
The Museo Storico-Archeologico dell’Università del Salento (MuSA) was inaugurated in 2007 on the ground floor of the Studium 2000 complex, in Via di Valesio in Lecce. It was founded to strengthen the facilities and services for teaching and research in the historical-archaeological field of the university, and to document and promote the results of the university's archaeologists and ancient historians, most of whom belong to the Department of Cultural Heritage.
The route occupies about 500 square metres in five rooms. The first presents the stages of growth of the university's historical-archaeological field; rooms two to four illustrate, through representative cases, prehistory and protohistory, the Messapians, and the Roman, Late Antique and medieval periods; the last is devoted to excavations, surveys and studies carried out in various areas of the Mediterranean, from Italy to Turkey, Ukraine, Syria, Egypt, Sudan and Malta.
The display features over 300 finds from excavations in the Salento territory and makes extensive use of relief models, casts, models and 2D and 3D reconstructions. The museum has a multimedia display system for consulting digital content, and PC workstations for accessing the MuSA portal.
